My b guitar sounds 'dull'. Help?

I have a fender precision b copy that has had a very rough life from stage 1. Since i took it apart and redid the wiring and checked everthing it has lost the edge of the sound. It now sound like a synth b rather than a b guitar. Any ideas to help bring the sound back. It has had new strings recently and it seems the pickups are very recessed into the body compared with other b'
