I'm curious about how kids get their own email account. Or do they?

My granddaughter is ten and says a lot of her friends have their own email. We tried Gmail but you need to be 18 for that. I suspect most email accounts require you to be 18. So, do kids just lie about their age? Do they somehow get one attached to their parent's email? Any information would be appreciated. Thanks.
